Ive had a renewed interest in the Viet Nam war, why we went there and who were those Viet Cong combatants who were outgunned and lost almost every battle, but managed to be an effective fighting force. This is one of two books I have found, that are written by former Vietcong. In both books, I learned that in many cases, the way North Viet Nam envisioned the country after reunification, was not at all what these freedom fighters had in mind. This author was more involved in the governing and propaganda machine, and wasn’t actually in the fighting. On first pass, I think what the book talks about is historically accurate. What is missing are some of the mass murder and assasinations of fellow countrymen who did not want communism. The atrocities by the N Vietnamese exceed any committed by the US. There is little or no mention of this. The story told here is more about citizen soldiers who wanted self governance and to be free of the French, and later, US control. There was cooperation with many groups of fighters, but the more aggressive and dominating factions were the Communists and the socialist leaning groups. I didn’t really understand how the country became split in half after WW II, the role of Japanese occupation and how the Japanese and French formed an alliance during the war years.Viet Nam and Korea were in many ways formed as a result of the Soviet Union and Allied forces attempting to jockey for control of what type government was to form in the post war period. I didn’t realize how much interfactional fighting was going on between the Stalinist and Trotskyite schools of Communism. This author paints the Stalinists as being murderous as they attempted to defeat the more Idealistically pure version of Communism that the Trotsky faction was.At least this is what I learned from the book. I have read that many Viet Cong fighters were not given positions of power in the re unified post war country and that many left rather than put up with totalitarian government. It was more of an educational book than a pleasure read for me.

Ngo Van has passed away. Thankfully he has produced a riveting tale of an all too forgotten part of history with this book which will continue to live on well into the future. Emerging from a very modest background, Ngo Van became a revolutionary out of necessity. A sharp mind and instinct enabled him to stay on the right path even in the face of numerable obstacles. Hounded by the French imperialists and Ho Chi Minh's Stalinist henchmen alike, he continued to fight for genuine human liberation through it all. While I cannot speak on the original French writings this book is based on, in this edition Ngo Van's story is well written and artfully told. The fragmentation of the last section doesn't take much if anything away from the work as a whole. Highly recommended!

LOVE!

In the first half of the 20th century, Vietnam was a swirling broth of revolution. Ngo Van was born into the middle of it and lived through most of it as an activist until after WWII. The first half of the book, In the Land of the Cracked Bell, chronicles his life from birth through his departure from Vietnam in 1948. It's a fascinating story of the contending parties fighting each other as well as the French for control of the country. In the end, the Stalinists won out and Trotskyites like Van were in mortal danger. Many of his closest friends and companions, who had survived the French prisons, the tortures and the many armed conflicts, were murdered by Ho and his henchmen. Van escaped in the nick of time and emigrated to France. Van devotes an entire chapter to short bios of each of his many friends who died, from diseases contracted in prison, from murders by contending parties, from the many skirmishes that took place in those decades. The second half, In the Land of Heloise, is incomplete. Van died before he could finish the book. But we learn a lot about his time in France, his changing political views and his melancholy for the many losses he suffered through his life. He sums up his beliefs by quoting Karl Marx, "The existence of the state and the existence of slavery are inseparable."In the end, Van never experienced the one thing he longed for most, the independence of his people and the removal of the yoke of the cruel tyrants that ruled over them.

I loved this book. You often forget that Vietnam was a hub of Trotskiest and other anti-stalin socialist activist versus the colonial regime, and was brutally wiped out by their so-called Stalinist allies. Pretty good and a fascinating look at a very forgotten chapter in history.
